A quick update on Right to Work Checks for you….

For the millions of foreign nationals living and working in the UK – including the 3.5 million EU, EEA and Swiss citizens to whom the new rules apply – demonstrating immigration status is the key to applying for a job.

Penalties for employers failing to make proper checks can reach £20,000 so employers need to understand this process.

The simplest way to demonstrate immigration status is using a UK government share code: an online code that can be shared with employers as proof of right to work.

So how do these share codes work?

They are simple! Great for busy employers to get the checks they need quickly.

Any non-UK national living in the UK is eligible to access a share code.  They must log into gov.uk with the ID they used for their visa application and a six digit code that will be sent to their mobile phone.  Once logged in, a candidate will be able to view their immigration status, and they are then given the opportunity to generate a share code to ‘prove their status’.  Selecting ‘create share code’ will generate a nine digit code on screen (valid for 90 days) which candidates can then give to their employer, alongside their date of birth in order for the right to work check to be completed.

The employer then puts this information into gov.uk to view the candidates immigration status.
