A clear process for onboarding new starters might sound a bit boring, but I guarantee you will reap the rewards if you follow these simple steps.

Introducing the new employee to the team, helping them become familiar with your processes and procedures and the requirement of his or her role is key. This starts on day one and carries on during the probation and induction period.

  • Offer support and training
Schedule a daily check in, and move this to weekly or monthly as
the employee settles into their new role. Don’t forget to provide feedback.
  • Ensure IT, equipment and systems are ready for day one
This is such a simple one but so often it isn’t ready, and the employee could feel like you had forgotten they were starting. It just doesn’t create a great first impression of the company.
  • Assign a buddy
This is someone they can ask the questions to and seek support from. This will help the new employee feel connected to the team.
  • Don’t forget the little things
Social opportunities to discuss work and ask any questions, as well as providing space to find common ground with their colleagues.
